Here’s an Easter egg for you… In honor of Autism Awareness Month our film is a $0.99 digital rental on iTunes and Amazon!
It was realistic and far from fairy tale, but not unfulfilled. His journey was worth the ride, and it still concluded on a strong note. Many critics called this heart warming, and I am inclined to agree with them. It made you care about Luke. I actually cringed and felt bad when people said crude words to our struggling protagonist.
The acting was exceptional. Lou Taylor Pucci did his homework, and conducted himself in a manner a person with Autism would. I have a cousin who has it, and I witnessed a few similar, and key traits. It is no surprise that he was both nominated and won awards for this role.
(…) If you are in the mood for a character-driven, feel-good, film with immensely talented actors or actresses, look no further. Director Alonso Mayo worked with people suffering from Autism and Asperger Syndrome, and he used his knowledge to construct a powerful and motivating film that deserves your attention.

Thanks Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival! The Story of Luke picked up the prize for best Northern Ontario feature film! We loved shooting in the North!
“Even though it’s about a young man with autism, we didn’t want to focus too much on that,” writer/director Alonso Mayo said over the phone from Los Angeles.
“It could have been anyone. He just happened to have autism. He was just a guy who had a lot of the same issues as young men. He wants to be independent. He wants a job, a girl and a life.”
The Story of Luke is Mayo’s first feature length film, a story inspired by his research documentary based on several trips he made to the Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru, a school his mother founded for people with autism and other developmental disabilities in Lima, Peru.
Mayo spent his childhood travelling back and forth between the South American country and Lawrence, Kansas. His mother founded the school, which now has several locations across the country, so he grew up surrounded by the students, their parents and the professionals who worked there. Mayo said he was always fascinated with autistic students — so much so he felt compelled to write their story, albeit a fictional one, when he wrote the script for The Story of Luke.
“I didn’t want it to be documentary,” said Mayo. “I wanted it to be entertaining and that’s why I took a lot of creative licence when I wrote the story.”
The film was screened in Sault Ste. Marie earlier this year and has since been picked up by a distributer. Next is the international market.
Attention Northern Ontario! This Wednesday September 18th at 7:00pm there will be a Gala Screening of The Story of Luke as part of Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival, sponsored by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.

Luke’s autism is approached in a realistic manner. He is not Dustin Hoffman’s savant character from “Rain Man.” Luke isn’t a human calculator who counts cards, but this does not make him any less of a compelling character. Director Alfonso Mayo approached Luke’s autism in a way that best reflects those living with autism.
(…) Hollywood take note, autism is NOT a setback, nor is it only interesting in the form of a genius character. Luke’s experience is just like the rest of my generation’s, autism or not. His determination is something all millennial kids can relate to.
